Letters from 9/11 Family Group to Obama Go Unanswered

On three separate occasions, 9/11 Families United for Justice Against Terrorism has sent letters to President Obama, asking him to declassify the 28-page finding on foreign government support of the 9/11 hijackers. Each letter takes a slightly different approach to pleading for the release of the redacted section of a joint House/Senate intelligence study, but one thing they share in common is the response from the president and the White House: complete silence.

One would think an organized group of 9/11 family members would at least merit the courtesy of a presidential reply—if only to say he had received their letter and would give due consideration to their request. Instead, Obama has opted to ignore them, despite the fact that he has reportedly twice promised 9/11 families he would declassify the 28 pages.

The group sent its first letter on June 20, 2013, and never heard back. The group tried again on May 9, 2014—just ahead of the dedication of the 9/11 Museum in New York. Again, silence. Still determined, the organization sent a third letter on June 24 of this year that has likewise gone unanswered.

These letters weren’t simply dropped in a mailbox: According to the group’s co-chair, 9/11 survivor Sharon Premoli, the first was routed through the Office of the White House Counsel and the second and third were delivered to the White House by two different members of Congress.

The letters remind the president of his promises to 9/11 families, and point to the large and growing number of credible experts—including former Senator Bob Graham, who co-chaired the inquiry that created the 28 pages, and both the chairman and vice-chairman of the 9/11 Commission—who say there’s no valid national security reason for the continued secrecy. Indeed, even past and present Secretaries of State in the Obama White House Hillary Clinton and John Kerry are on record urging the declassification of the 28 pages; they did so as senators in a letter to George W. Bush.

You can read the group’s most recent letter here. It was delivered to the White House by North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones, who introduced and continues to champion H.Res.428, which urges the president to declassify the 28 pages.

The Obama White House seems to hope that, by ignoring 9/11 families, demands for 9/11 transparency will fall silent. However, as the group says in the closing of its latest unanswered letter, “There is a gathering storm in pursuit of the truth.”

The strength of that gathering storm lies in the growing number of everyday Americans who are contacting Congress and the White House to demand the release of the 28 pages. Take action today.

  1. I had a personal letter handed directly to the President about various issues about things the families of victims are concerned. I did not even receive a “canned” reply.

  2. There is no such thing as a “secret document” that should be held from the public, unless there is a war presently in operation that Congress has declared. Presently there is none declared by congress.
Five domestic flights were hijacked that no Flight Service Stations detected, no Flight Controllers saw, no military aircraft responded to, along with dozens of other wild facts, which could only point to a cover up by ours and other governments. For anyone, to say that the most polished military on the planet, missed this horrible event completely without being completely blinded, by the very agency they are to protect, is absurd. It also calls our honorable military, stupid. No terrorist agency could have done this if they had not had help. Period. The intentions of the nations involved, likely primarily Syria, Saudi Arabia and their backers (these Arab countries had way more help than just America), was to follow through with this only after they had an open door. Obama is not simply lying like Bush did, about why he feels he can’t release these. It isn’t only America he is protecting. Unlike Bush, who should have but probably didn’t even know, Obama is acting in the interest of those that protect that very cover-up because of their own criminal preservation. Even though ignorance does not excuse Bush, Obama is doing this with the full knowledge of everything it represents.
We as Americans used to demand more. It used to be that we would never say, “There is nothing we can do.” We used to be aware of the dangers of even believing that. We are citizens of The United States of America! Our Declaration of Independence declares “…it is our right, it is our duty…..” as Citizens to act as such! We are supposed to be Governors. Protecting The Constitution is your job as a Citizen.
If you give authority away, as we have done, you must take it back. The Constitution clearly lays this out. Every single tool you need is there. How many voters are there? How many elected officials? “They” are doing what you allow them to do. There should be no exceptions from a single one of every one of our relatives and friends. Friendships should never have the ability to threaten the safety of our loved ones or our nation. It is a threat to everyone you know if one of who you know remains silent on this. You have a duty as an American Citizen not to allow it.
Termites are tiny creatures. Enough of them can take down a structure trillions of times bigger than they. I’ll just bet, you would never hear one of them say, “You can’t get anybody to get together.”
